This image will be familiar to those that have visited our Fish Creek Alaska image gallery, and is my personal favourite from our 2007 visit to Alaska. This particular grizzly “snuck” around behind the viewing platform avoiding a mother and her three cubs in the river to get to the glacial pool and grasses adjacent to Fish Creek.

Within the safety of the viewing platform this bear was no more than 15 meters (~50 feet) from us; so close that I was unable to get the entire bear into the frame!
A note of caution is in order: The provided viewing platform and guidance of experienced staff allowed visitors to view bears in their natural habitat at a much closer range than is ordinarily considered safe.
Being so close allowed for a good look into ‘his’ eyes. For me the eyes make this image work conveying a sense of personality and even comprehension on some level. ‘He’ hung around for about 10 minutes grazing casting a cautious eye towards the numerous viewers and photographers before crossing the creek and road disappearing into the vicinity of the Titan Trail.
A truly remarkable wildlife experience not to be missed.
