I can accept getting skunked while trying to shoot wildlife, it’s part of the game and as the old saying goes “sometimes you get the bear (in this case a hawk) and sometimes the bear (hawk) gets you”. Subjects being uncooperative I can deal with but getting mocked by them is something completely different.

With spring in full effect on the prairie migrating raptors are making their way back to northern summer staging areas. We found a local nesting pair of Red Tails in the area and I am keen to capture this years activity – so far photographer 0, hawks 1. I see these hawks everyday during my commute perched perfectly on a fence post basking in the warm early morning or evening light practically begging to have their photo taken. So this weekend I pack up the gear and head out… where were they today!?! I parked my car scoped the nest – nothing. Thought I’d wait them out – still nothing. Rejected I return to the car to find one of them is perched on the light standard above with that smug look that said it all, ‘today is not your day’. As I approach my subject glides effortlessly into the grove of trees that protects the nest disappearing from view. Until next time raptor. I’ll be back!

The day wasn’t a total bust as I found some waterfowl. Of course while setting up I scared them out of viewing range but was rewarded with this reflected image of an old rusty dilapidated farmers fence. At this point I’ll take what I can get and live by the words, ‘beggars can’t be choosers’.

Enjoy.
