Despite the Rocky Mountain Outlook’s lead in – Fourth caribou found dead (link here) – the article contains some good news. It appears Parks Canada is considering the potential of reintroducing animals into suitable habitat areas within the Park.
Some species, such as caribou, require the protection of vast territories of old-growth boreal forest, potentially placing any conservation protection program at odds with oil and gas, mining, or logging companies. Not a good week for Alberta’s caribou. The Globe and Mail recently published an online article about Environment Canada rejecting a report from leading scientists regarding caribou recovery efforts – link to the article here. We’ve seen this tactic before – if you don’t like the research simply do more to achieve less.
Banff’s caribou recovery efforts were dealt a potentially fatal blow earlier this month as an avalanche killed 3 members of the herd.
