Karanga Camp (alt 13,231′) Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania.
Every evening the bustle of camp life slowed in anticipation of another fantastic sunset above the clouds. Cooks poked their heads out of preparation tents eyes drawn instinctively westward, the porters gathered on high points surrounding camp their otherwise lively banter and laughter subdued for the moment, and our guides gathered with us to witness the end of another successful day. Everyone it seemed had a camera at the ready. For the next half hour heads and cameras swivelled up and down trying to determine whether the glowing glaciers above or the clouds seemingly on fire below presented the better composition.
This image of a porter silhouetted against the setting sun typified those moments before the stars appeared and hunger set in almost as quickly as the chill of evening.
