Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. This image is the first of many photos to come out of our recent trip to Africa. What started as a routine stop at a kopje (rocky outcrop) to view the vibrant Agama lizards scurrying and sunning themselves on the rocks turned surreal as our guide yelled “lion” surprised to see this rather large male napping in the underbrush meters from our parked Rover.

We’d expected to see and photograph lions on this trip but not like this. If not for the lowly lizards we would have missed the king of the jungle.

Our guide later informed us that this particular kopje was a popular lunch stop for those on safari. Not this day!
